What is a second opinion?
A second opinion is an independent review of your diagnosis or the treatment you have been offered, given by a doctor who was not involved in your original care. It is a normal, everyday part of medicine. The General Medical Council expects doctors to respect a patient’s right to seek one.
Do I need a referral from my GP or consultant?
No. You can book directly. You do not need permission from your current team, though bringing your records and scans makes the appointment far more useful.
Will this affect my current care or my place on a waiting list?
No. A private second opinion sits alongside your existing care. You keep your NHS referral, your place on any waiting list and your relationship with your own team unless you choose to change it.
What happens on the day?
The appointment is 45 minutes, face to face. Professor Lee takes your history, reviews any imaging and reports you bring, and carries out a clinical examination before discussing what he sees.
What do I need to bring?
Bring any scans (on disc or via a secure link), operation notes, clinic letters and discharge summaries you have. Our preparing for your appointment page has a full checklist and explains how to request records you do not already have.
What do I get afterwards?
A written summary of the opinion, sent to you. With your consent, a copy can also go to your GP.
What happens after the second opinion?
That is your decision. Depending on what the appointment finds, Professor Lee can help you himself, or refer you on to someone better placed to help, or you may decide to continue with your current plan. Nothing is arranged for you without your agreement.
Is this a video consultation?
No. This service is face to face only, at The Keep Clinic in Grantham or MSK House in Sleaford.
How much does it cost?
The second-opinion consultation is £100. This is a self-pay service; see the fees page for what is and is not included.
Can I use private medical insurance?
This service is self-pay. If your insurer covers a private orthopaedic second opinion, you may be able to reclaim the cost; check your policy and ask us for an invoice.
Where are appointments held?
At The Keep Clinic in Grantham or MSK House in Sleaford, for patients from Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. See our locations pages for addresses and how to find each clinic.
How do I get copies of my scans and records?
You can ask the hospital or trust that holds them, under your right of access (a subject access request). Our preparing for your appointment page explains how, with links to the official guidance.
What if my situation is urgent?
This is not an emergency service. If you have a new or worsening symptom that concerns you, contact NHS 111, your GP, or 999 in an emergency.
